The International Cleantech Company Manages 536 Megawatts in North America
Powerit Solutions’ Spara energy management system now controls an estimated 30 percent of California’s automated demand response (Auto-DR) capacity—the result of Powerit’s work to make OpenADR a viable option for businesses.
Beyond California, the international cleantech company’s technology is managing an estimated 536 megawatts of electrical load in North America using the full range of energy management strategies it enables, which include demand control, dynamic pricing optimization, and energy efficiency as well as DR.
According to the OpenADR Alliance, the California ISO estimates that the Golden State’s OpenADR capacity reached 200 megawatts by the end of 2011. Powerit Solutions estimates that it’s currently managing almost a third of this.

Deloitte published a brief report in earlier this month warning that “U.S. businesses may no longer be able to count on the stable and predictable electricity prices they have enjoyed for the past decade.” Many energy-intensive businesses have already felt the pain of high demand charges and the shock of dynamic pricing spikes. Here’s what’s coming, according to Deloitte:
“With many energy producing facilities scheduled to retire in the next ten years, some of which will be replaced by more expensive facilities, the price organizations pay for a kilowatt of electricity is expected to rise. As a result, electricity prices the next ten years may be unlike the past ten years.”
The report recommends that companies insulate themselves by treating energy as a manageable asset. We couldn’t agree more—and of course, we can help.

The energy economy of the 21st century demands an innovative energy grid. Right now, power comes to your house on what amounts to an inefficient one-way track. By upgrading the grid with smart meters at homes and offices that talk back to utilities, power transmission becomes more efficient as supply is adjusted to meet need. Equally importantly, a modernized grid creates the infrastructure needed to plug in distributed clean energy producers, from wind to solar. While the subject hasn’t attracted the same attention as efforts to green commutes with electric cars, it’s just as important to our future: According to the EPA, 80 percent of all carbon emissions come from electricity production.
